Last year, Vote.org set an ambitious goal to register and turn out 5 million voters in time for Election Day 2020. A lot of things have changed in the last month, but that goal remains the same. They remain committed to turning out a record number of voters in 2020.
Vote.org has the experience, the infrastructure, and the flexibility to succeed, even with the coronavirus outbreak forcing them to change some of the strategies they use to reach voters.
They plan to work to inform and turn out voters, no matter what. Here’s what they’ve done since the coronavirus outbreak hit the United States:
Too often voters sit out elections because they don’t have the right information. Vote.org has created a comprehensive page dedicated to elections and COVID-19. They update this page every time a state changes its elections rules. They’ve shared this resource widely with the help of supporters and partner organizations.
With most Americans under orders to stay home, Vote.org has worked to promote their tools so that voters can safely verify their registration and, if eligible, apply for an absentee ballot from home.
Vote.org has the infrastructure to rapidly spread key information about elections and voting through emails and texts. In March, they sent voters more than 4 million emails and about 700,000 text messages about sometimes last-minute election changes. This was in addition to regularly scheduled outreach to voters.
They to advocate for policies that make voting safer, easier, and more secure, including the expansion of mail ballot voting.
“We’re going to register as many voters as we can, and ensure that they have the tools, information, and access they need to participate in our democracy. Our tools and resources are free, easy to use, and can scale up to serve millions of people.”
